4	4		SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
5	5		WHEREAS, Proud residents of Mineola are celebrating the 150th
6	6		anniversary of their community's founding in 2023; and
7	7		WHEREAS, Mineola was established in 1873 when the
8	8		International-Great Northern Railroad and the Texas and Pacific
9	9		Railway built lines through the northeastern region of the state;
10	10		the town became a vital part of the area's commerce, and trains
11	11		often stopped for crew and passengers to drink from the
12	12		"health-giving" waters of the community's artesian well; and
13	13		WHEREAS, By 1890, the population of Mineola had grown to
14	14		2,000 people, and the town boasted seven churches and several
15	15		schools, hotels, and banks; the local economy was supported by the
16	16		timber industry, as well as cattle raising and the production of a
17	17		variety of agricultural crops; a chair factory was opened in 1886,
18	18		and the facility later operated as a crate and basket factory until
19	19		1952; in the 1940s, the discovery of oil in Wood County and the
20	20		construction of a railroad shop further bolstered the town's
21	21		economy; and
22	22		WHEREAS, Today, Mineola is a designated "National Main Street
23	23		City," and its picturesque downtown is a popular destination for
24	24		tourists; in addition to a variety of local shops and restaurants,
25	25		residents and visitors alike enjoy such attractions as the annual
26	26		Iron Horse Heritage Festival, the Mineola Nature Preserve, and the
27	27		Lake Country Playhouse and the Historic Select Theater; and
28	28		WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build
29	29		an even brighter future, the people of Mineola are justifiably
30	30		proud of their community, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor their
31	31		contributions to the story of the Lone Star State on this milestone
32	32		occasion; now, therefore, be it
33	33		RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
34	34		hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of the city of Mineola and
35	35		extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for the future.
