5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to |

6 | 6 | | recognize Dr. E. Linda Villarreal on her distinguished service and |
---|
7 | 7 | | leadership as president of the Texas Medical Association; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Linda Villarreal served as president of the |
---|
9 | 9 | | Texas Medical Association from 2021 to 2022; an invaluable asset to |
---|
10 | 10 | | the organization during the COVID-19 pandemic, she guided the |
---|
11 | 11 | | administration with diligence and determination in a time of |
---|
12 | 12 | | challenges and uncertainty, and her leadership reflected her |
---|
13 | 13 | | commitment to the highest ideals of medicine; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Villarreal opened Memorial Medical Clinic in |
---|
15 | 15 | | 1989 in her hometown of Edinburg, where she has practiced medicine |
---|
16 | 16 | | for more than 30 years; trained as an internist, she has fought for |
---|
17 | 17 | | improved health care at the Texas-Mexico border, where patients |
---|
18 | 18 | | often cannot afford insurance; she has worked tirelessly to support |
---|
19 | 19 | | the interests of patients in rural regions experiencing physician |
---|
20 | 20 | | shortages and to shed light on such social determinants of health as |
---|
21 | 21 | | food insecurity, unemployment, and environmental hazards; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her career and her leadership as |
---|
23 | 23 | | president of the Texas Medical Association, Dr. Villarreal made |
---|
24 | 24 | | many contributions to organized medicine in the Rio Grande Valley |
---|
25 | 25 | | and across the state; a vocal protector of medical practitioners |
---|
26 | 26 | | and their patients, Dr. Villarreal defended the interests of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | medical profession and contributed her efforts to increasing |
---|
28 | 28 | | funding for graduate medical education; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Driven and determined in all of her endeavors, |
---|
30 | 30 | | Dr. Villarreal remained undeterred in the pursuit of her childhood |
---|
31 | 31 | | dream of becoming a doctor despite many obstacles and great |
---|
32 | 32 | | personal sacrifice; she earned her bachelor's degree in pharmacy |
---|
33 | 33 | | from The University of Texas at Austin in 1970, and after practicing |
---|
34 | 34 | | pharmacology for over a decade, she enrolled in medical school in |
---|
35 | 35 | | Tampico, Mexico; after earning her degree, she completed her |
---|
36 | 36 | | medical residency in El Paso before returning to Edinburg, where |
---|
37 | 37 | | she opened a private practice in internal medicine and joined the |
---|
38 | 38 | | staff of Edinburg General Hospital; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Villarreal has served in a range of leadership |
---|
40 | 40 | | roles with the Hidalgo-Starr County Medical Society, and she served |
---|
41 | 41 | | as the Texas delegate to the American Medical Association; she has |
---|
42 | 42 | | held positions with the Texas Medical Association including board, |
---|
43 | 43 | | council, and committee roles in addition to her leadership as chair |
---|
44 | 44 | | of the board and her service as president of the association; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, A brilliant, compassionate, and widely respected |
---|
46 | 46 | | physician, Dr. Villarreal has dedicated her time and energy to |
---|
47 | 47 | | saving lives and to faithfully serving the interests of patients |
---|
48 | 48 | | and the members of her profession; she is an inspiration to her |
---|
49 | 49 | | colleagues and to generations of future doctors, and it is indeed |
---|
50 | 50 | | fitting that she receive special recognition on her outstanding |
---|
51 | 51 | | leadership and achievements; now, therefore, be it |
---|
52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
53 | 53 | | hereby commend Dr. E. Linda Villarreal on her exemplary service as |
---|
54 | 54 | | president of the Texas Medical Association and on her invaluable |
---|
55 | 55 | | contributions to the field of medicine in Texas and extend to her |
---|
56 | 56 | | best wishes for the future and for continued success in her |
---|
57 | 57 | | endeavours; and, be it further |
---|
58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for her |
---|
59 | 59 | | as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature. |
