5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Pearland are gathering in
37 Austin on February 22, 2023, to celebrate Pearland Day at the
48 State Capitol; and
59 WHEREAS, Spanning Brazoria, Fort Bend, and Harris
610 Counties, Pearland was originally established as Mark Belt in
711 1893; the town's name was changed the following year to reflect
812 the large number of pear trees in the area; by 1898, Pearland had
913 a newspaper, 12 businesses, and 75 residents; however, because
1014 many of the pear trees were destroyed by the 1900 and 1915
1115 Galveston hurricanes, population growth slowed for a
1216 considerable time; the planting of oranges and figs helped revive
1317 local agriculture until the freeze of 1918 caused another wave of
1418 damage; Pearland again recovered when oil and gas were discovered
1519 in the area in 1934, which led to the development of the Hastings
1620 Oilfield; and
1721 WHEREAS, While enjoying the benefits of its proximity to
1822 Houston and sites such as the Johnson Space Center, Kemah
1923 Boardwalk, and the Galveston beaches, Pearland maintains its
2024 unique character; in 1999, it was named an All-America City by
2125 the National Civic League, and its notable attractions include
2226 the more than 100-year-old Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway
2327 depot, the Pearland Town Center, and an emerging biotech and
2428 manufacturing area known as the Kirby District; and
2529 WHEREAS, Pearland is fortunate to have a local chamber of
26- commerce that works diligently to further the city's
27- development and to keep the citizenry informed on matters that
28- affect the region; the city also boasts a highly rated school
29- system that is committed to helping with workforce
30- development; the University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland
31- Campus is meeting the need for post-secondary education
32- options in the area with the addition of a health science
33- building, and the city benefits from an ongoing partnership
34- between the university and Alvin Community College; and
30+ commerce that works diligently to further the city's development
31+ and to keep the citizenry informed on matters that affect the
32+ region; the city also boasts a highly rated school system that is
33+ committed to helping with workforce development; the University
34+ of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus is meeting the need for
35+ post-secondary education options in the area with the addition of
36+ a health science building, and the city benefits from an ongoing
37+ partnership between the university and Alvin Community College;
38+ and
3539 WHEREAS, Since the 1970s, Pearland has experienced
3640 explosive growth and substantial development; from its humble
3741 beginnings, Pearland has become one of the fastest-growing
3842 communities in the country; the residents of Pearland can take
3943 great civic pride in their community as they continue to
4044 celebrate its neighborly spirit and cherished traditions for
4145 generations to come; now, therefore, be it
4246 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4347 Legislature, hereby recognize February 22, 2023, as Pearland Day
4448 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4549 sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in
4650 Austin; and, be it further
4751 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4852 the delegation as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
