5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Ranked No. 1 to start the year, the Tigers lived |

6 | 6 | | up to that billing, dominating their regular-season foes to take |

7 | 7 | | an unbeaten record into the playoffs; after securing victories |
---|
8 | 8 | | over Trinity Leadership Cedar Hill and Jacksboro and Palmer High |

9 | 9 | | Schools, Gunter dispatched Holliday High 31-7 in the state |
---|
10 | 10 | | quarterfinals; in the semifinals, the Tigers bested Canadian |
---|
11 | 11 | | 21-20 to earn a repeat trip to the state title game and their |

12 | 12 | | fifth finals appearance over the past seven seasons; and |

13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Competing at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on |

14 | 14 | | December 15, Gunter and Poth High School faced off in a battle of |

15 | 15 | | undefeated teams; the Tigers took control from the outset, going |
---|
16 | 16 | | up 21-0 at halftime and extending their advantage in the second |
---|
17 | 17 | | half; triumphing by the final score of 42-7, the team's players |
---|
18 | 18 | | hoisted the championship trophy for the third time in program |
---|
19 | 19 | | history, adding to the crowns the school collected in 2016 and |
---|
20 | 20 | | 2019; Gunter closed 2022 with a perfect record of 16 wins and no |
---|
21 | 21 | | losses; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Gunter was paced by Ashton Bennett, who ran for |
---|
23 | 23 | | two scores to earn the Offensive Most Valuable Player honor; |
---|
24 | 24 | | teammate Colin Peacock produced 4 1/2 tackles and an interception |
---|
25 | 25 | | to become the Defensive MVP; the team also received valuable |
---|
26 | 26 | | contributions throughout the year from the other members of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | roster, and these talented student-athletes were ably guided by |
---|
28 | 28 | | head coach Jake Fieszel and his staff; and |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is a daunting task |

30 | 30 | | that requires countless hours of hard work and an unwavering |

31 | 31 | | commitment to excellence, and the Gunter Tigers may take |
---|
32 | 32 | | justifiable pride in their accomplishments on the gridiron; now, |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the Gunter High School football |
