SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 230
WHEREAS, The Gunter High School football team continued
its proud tradition of success by winning the 2022 University
Interscholastic League 3A Division 2 state championship; and
WHEREAS, Ranked No. 1 to start the year, the Tigers lived
up to that billing, dominating their regular-season foes to take
an unbeaten record into the playoffs; after securing victories
over Trinity Leadership Cedar Hill and Jacksboro and Palmer High
Schools, Gunter dispatched Holliday High 31-7 in the state
quarterfinals; in the semifinals, the Tigers bested Canadian
21-20 to earn a repeat trip to the state title game and their
fifth finals appearance over the past seven seasons; and
WHEREAS, Competing at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on
December 15, Gunter and Poth High School faced off in a battle of
undefeated teams; the Tigers took control from the outset, going
up 21-0 at halftime and extending their advantage in the second
half; triumphing by the final score of 42-7, the team's players
hoisted the championship trophy for the third time in program
history, adding to the crowns the school collected in 2016 and
2019; Gunter closed 2022 with a perfect record of 16 wins and no
losses; and
WHEREAS, Gunter was paced by Ashton Bennett, who ran for
two scores to earn the Offensive Most Valuable Player honor;
teammate Colin Peacock produced 4 1/2 tackles and an interception
to become the Defensive MVP; the team also received valuable
contributions throughout the year from the other members of the
roster, and these talented student-athletes were ably guided by
head coach Jake Fieszel and his staff; and
WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is a daunting task
that requires countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
commitment to excellence, and the Gunter Tigers may take
justifiable pride in their accomplishments on the gridiron; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
Legislature, hereby congratulate the Gunter High School football
team on winning the 2022 UIL 3A Division 2 state championship and
extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best
wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
