55 WHEREAS, A caring and purposeful life came to an untimely
66 end with the passing of Dr. Nancy Lefeber Hughes of Galveston on
77 March 18, 2022, at the age of 67; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Galveston on December 21, 1954, to Edward
99 and Ellie Lefeber, the former Nancy Ellen Lefeber grew up with
1010 the companionship of five older siblings, Edward, John, Robert,
1111 Ann, and Donald; she graduated from Ball High School in 1973 and
1212 married her high school sweetheart, Michael B. Hughes, in 1976;
1313 as the daughter of a physician and a nurse, she was drawn to
1414 medicine, and after earning a bachelor's degree in nursing from
1515 The University of Texas at Austin, she worked as a nurse at
1616 St. David's Hospital for 10 years; later, she continued her
1717 nursing career in Galveston in the intensive care unit at the
1818 former St. Mary's Hospital and in the oncology department of The
1919 University of Texas Medical Branch; and
2020 WHEREAS, Following in her father's footsteps, Ms. Hughes
2121 returned to school to study medicine, graduating from the UTMB
2222 Medical School in 1994, when she was 39 years old; she worked as a
2323 primary care physician at UTMB from 1994 to 2008, before starting
2424 her own private practice, Internal Medicine Associates of
2525 Galveston; over the years, she managed her practice with
2626 diligence and cared for her patients with the utmost compassion;
2727 and
2828 WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was the devoted mother of three
2929 children, Laura, Katherine, and Matthew, and she was further
3030 blessed with two grandsons, Davis and Connor; she enjoyed hosting
3131 family gatherings at the home in Galveston's East End that she
3232 purchased and restored with her husband, and in addition to
3333 spending time with her loved ones, she was fond of rollerblading,
3434 sailing at Sea Star Base Galveston, making arts and crafts, going
3535 to see the Houston Grand Opera, and traveling the world; she was a
3636 lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she displayed
3737 her beautiful singing voice, and she also played the violin in
3838 the Galveston Symphony Orchestra for many years alongside her
3939 husband, a cellist; and
4040 WHEREAS, While the passing of Dr. Nancy Hughes brings
4141 great sadness to her family, friends, and patients, she leaves
4242 behind a legacy that will forever be cherished; now, therefore,
4343 be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4545 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Nancy Lefeber
4646 Hughes and extend deepest sympathy to all those who mourn her
4747 passing; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4949 prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5050 this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Nancy Lefeber Hughes.
