5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A caring and purposeful life came to an untimely |

6 | 6 | | end with the passing of Dr. Nancy Lefeber Hughes of Galveston on |

7 | 7 | | March 18, 2022, at the age of 67; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Galveston on December 21, 1954, to Edward |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Ellie Lefeber, the former Nancy Ellen Lefeber grew up with |
---|
10 | 10 | | the companionship of five older siblings, Edward, John, Robert, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Ann, and Donald; she graduated from Ball High School in 1973 and |
---|
12 | 12 | | married her high school sweetheart, Michael B. Hughes, in 1976; |
---|
13 | 13 | | as the daughter of a physician and a nurse, she was drawn to |
---|
14 | 14 | | medicine, and after earning a bachelor's degree in nursing from |
---|
15 | 15 | | The University of Texas at Austin, she worked as a nurse at |
---|
16 | 16 | | St. David's Hospital for 10 years; later, she continued her |
---|
17 | 17 | | nursing career in Galveston in the intensive care unit at the |
---|
18 | 18 | | former St. Mary's Hospital and in the oncology department of The |
---|
19 | 19 | | University of Texas Medical Branch; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Following in her father's footsteps, Ms. Hughes |
---|
21 | 21 | | returned to school to study medicine, graduating from the UTMB |
---|
22 | 22 | | Medical School in 1994, when she was 39 years old; she worked as a |
---|
23 | 23 | | primary care physician at UTMB from 1994 to 2008, before starting |
---|
24 | 24 | | her own private practice, Internal Medicine Associates of |
---|
25 | 25 | | Galveston; over the years, she managed her practice with |
---|
26 | 26 | | diligence and cared for her patients with the utmost compassion; |
---|
27 | 27 | | and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was the devoted mother of three |
---|
29 | 29 | | children, Laura, Katherine, and Matthew, and she was further |
---|
30 | 30 | | blessed with two grandsons, Davis and Connor; she enjoyed hosting |
---|
31 | 31 | | family gatherings at the home in Galveston's East End that she |
---|
32 | 32 | | purchased and restored with her husband, and in addition to |
---|
33 | 33 | | spending time with her loved ones, she was fond of rollerblading, |
---|
34 | 34 | | sailing at Sea Star Base Galveston, making arts and crafts, going |
---|
35 | 35 | | to see the Houston Grand Opera, and traveling the world; she was a |
---|
36 | 36 | | lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where she displayed |
---|
37 | 37 | | her beautiful singing voice, and she also played the violin in |
---|
38 | 38 | | the Galveston Symphony Orchestra for many years alongside her |
---|
39 | 39 | | husband, a cellist; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, While the passing of Dr. Nancy Hughes brings |
---|
41 | 41 | | great sadness to her family, friends, and patients, she leaves |
---|
42 | 42 | | behind a legacy that will forever be cherished; now, therefore, |
---|
43 | 43 | | be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Nancy Lefeber |
---|
46 | 46 | | Hughes and extend deepest sympathy to all those who mourn her |
---|
47 | 47 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

49 | 49 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
