| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The oldest known observance commemorating the end |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth celebrates the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | emancipation in June 1865 of enslaved African Americans in Texas; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Juneteenth Cultural Celebration Gala is |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | honoring the holiday with a much-anticipated black-tie event at |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Abraham Chavez Theatre; the gala includes a reception, an art |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | auction, and a Juneteenth history exhibit, as well as |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | performances highlighting Black excellence in the arts through |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the decades; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Proceeds will benefit YWCA El Paso del Norte |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Region and The Great Khalid Foundation and will support both |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | organizations' art, music, and cultural enrichment programs for |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | early childhood and school-aged children throughout the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Borderplex region; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, More than 150 years after emancipation was |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | proclaimed in Texas, Juneteenth continues to inspire gatherings |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | that pay tribute to the myriad achievements and immeasurable |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | fortitude of the African American community, and the Juneteenth |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Cultural Celebration Gala is furthering that proud tradition in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the El Paso area; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the Juneteenth Cultural |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Celebration Gala hosted by YWCA El Paso del Norte Region and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | extend to all those in attendance sincere best wishes for a |

| 30 | 30 | | memorable and meaningful event; and, be it further |
