44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Peter R. Rose of Austin on December 19, 2022, at the age
77 of 87; and
88 WHEREAS, A fifth-generation Texan, Pete Rose was born to Mary
99 Paterson and Llewellyn Rose on July 3, 1935, in Austin, and he grew
1010 up with a brother, Pat, and a sister, Sally; he graduated from
1111 Austin High School with the Class of 1953 and continued his
1212 education at The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned
1313 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in geology; and
1414 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career as a geologist,
1515 Mr. Rose worked for Shell, Stony Brook University, the
1616 U.S. Geological Survey, and Energy Reserves Group, Inc.; in 1980,
1717 he became an independent consulting geologist, and he spent a
1818 number of years providing corporate training in petroleum
1919 exploration risk analysis before founding Rose & Associates in
2020 1999; over the years, he published more than 80 papers on a variety
2121 of geotechnical topics as well as a definitive book on petroleum
2222 exploration; he also gained a reputation as a leading authority on
2323 the geology and history of the Edwards Plateau; and
2424 WHEREAS, Active in his professional community, Mr. Rose
2525 served as president of the American Association of Petroleum
2626 Geologists and the Austin Geological Society, and he was a fellow of
2727 a number of geological organizations; in recognition of his
2828 accomplishments, he received the Silver Medal from the Geological
2929 Society of London and the Michael T. Halbouty Outstanding
3030 Leadership Award from AAPG; a man of faith, he was a valued
3131 congregant of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church; and
3232 WHEREAS, In 1956, Mr. Rose wed Judith Sue Drummond, and
3333 though their marriage eventually ended, it brought into Mr. Rose's
3434 life three beloved daughters, Virginia, Cathy, and Peggy; he later
3535 married Karen Watkins, and they divorced in 1987; for 34 years, he
3636 shared his life with Alice Haldeman Reid, whom he married in 1989,
3737 and together they created a blended family that included his
3838 stepchildren, Wally and Jennifer; with the passing years, he was
3939 further blessed with eight grandchildren, Jack, Ben, Beau, Maya,
4040 McKenna, McKittrick, Cade, and Edie; and
4141 WHEREAS, Although Pete Rose will be deeply missed, he has
4242 left his family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will
4343 forever treasure; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4545 Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4646 Peter R. Rose and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his
4747 passing; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5050 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Pete Rose.
