5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
56 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
67 commemorates the life of Homer Hogues, who died June 27, 2023, at
78 the age of 96; and
89 WHEREAS, Homer Hogues was born on April 19, 1927, in
910 Navasota to Leroy and Lucinda Hogues; an exemplary serviceman
1011 with the Tuskegee Airmen, he devoted his life to honoring his
1112 country and his family and serving his fellow Americans; and
1213 WHEREAS, After brief stints at Fort Sam Houston and
1314 Shepherd Air Force Base, Homer arranged to be transferred to the
1415 Tuskegee Airmen as part of the 99th Fighter Squadron in the 332nd
1516 Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces; with his
1617 fellow Airmen, Staff Sergeant Hogues broke through racial
1718 barriers in the United States Army Air Forces through his
1819 distinguished service and support of the first African American
1920 military pilots; and
2021 WHEREAS, During his years of active service, Staff
2122 Sergeant Hogues received specialized training on the P-47
2223 Thunderbolt aircraft and helped prepare airplanes for the first
2324 Air Force gunnery competition in 1949, which resulted in a
2425 victory for the Tuskegee Airmen; he was noted for his exceptional
2526 skill as mechanic and for his steadfast commitment to his fellow
2627 servicemen; he was selected to participate in the second term
2728 inaugural parade of President Harry S. Truman, and he attended
2829 the 2012 inaugural parade of President Barack Obama; and
2930 WHEREAS, Homer returned to Texas after his military
3031 service and worked as a hard-chrome plater at Lane Plating Works
3132 for almost four decades; he remained an active member of his
3233 community and a proud representative of the Tuskegee Airmen, and
3334 he often spoke at schools, churches, and businesses about the
3435 Airmen and his trailblazing military career; and
3536 WHEREAS, Homer was married to the love of his life, Mattie
3637 Hogues, for 76 years; through all his endeavors, Homer enjoyed
37- the love and care of his beloved Mattie until her passing on
38- June 25, 2023, two days before Homer's death; and
39- WHEREAS, Homer Hogues inspired all who knew him through his
40- bravery, his love of family, and his lifelong patriotism; he

4749 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4850 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas

5052 memory of Homer Hogues.
