6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an esteemed civil engineer |
---|
7 | 7 | | with the passing of Marquis Gideon Goode Jr. of Dallas on June 18, |
---|
8 | 8 | | 2023, at the age of 101; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mark Goode was born in Quinlan on August 12, 1921, |
---|
10 | 10 | | and he grew up in Dallas; while a student at Texas A&M University |
---|
11 | 11 | | and a member of the Corps of Cadets, he was commissioned in the U.S. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Army; following his service in World War II, he returned to Texas |
---|
13 | 13 | | A&M to complete his civil engineering degree; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Goode began a four-decade career with |
---|
15 | 15 | | the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, |
---|
16 | 16 | | serving as a civil engineer and ultimately as agency director |
---|
17 | 17 | | before his retirement in 1986; he demonstrated visionary leadership |
---|
18 | 18 | | throughout his tenure, overseeing major growth in road construction |
---|
19 | 19 | | and the development of the Interstate Highway System; moreover, he |
---|
20 | 20 | | helped create employment opportunities for women and minorities; |
---|
21 | 21 | | and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Goode further contributed to his profession as |
---|
23 | 23 | | president of the Western Association of State Highway and |
---|
24 | 24 | | Transportation Officials and through his active involvement with |
---|
25 | 25 | | the American Association of State Highway and Transportation |
---|
26 | 26 | | Officials and the Transportation Research Board; in recognition of |
---|
27 | 27 | | his many accomplishments, he was inducted into the Texas |
---|
28 | 28 | | Transportation Hall of Honor and named a recipient of AASHTO's |
---|
29 | 29 | | highest accolade, the MacDonald Memorial Award; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Goode enjoyed the love and |
---|
31 | 31 | | support of his wife of 79 years, Lucille McDermott Goode, who |
---|
32 | 32 | | preceded him in death in 2021; they were the devoted parents of two |
---|
33 | 33 | | children, Scott and Mark, and they welcomed a host of grandchildren |
---|
34 | 34 | | and great-grandchildren into their family; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, While the passing of Mark Goode brings great sadness |
---|
36 | 36 | | to his loved ones, he leaves behind a legacy that will long be |
---|
37 | 37 | | treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature, 3rd |
---|
39 | 39 | | Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Marquis Gideon |
---|
40 | 40 | | Goode Jr. and extend heartfelt condolences to the members of his |
---|
41 | 41 | | family: to his son, Scott Goode, and his wife, Wanda; to his |
---|
42 | 42 | | daughter-in-law, Dianne Goode; to his grandchildren, Mark and Alex |
---|
43 | 43 | | Goode, Christopher and Dianne Irwin, Hunter Michael Carl Goode, and |
---|
44 | 44 | | Mac, Meg, Kate, and Charles and Allison Goode; to his |
---|
45 | 45 | | great-grandchildren, Mark and Micah Drew Goode, and Wesley, Connor, |

46 | 46 | | and Shepherd Irwin; to his niece, Linda Goode; and to his other |
