SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 84 WHEREAS, Nathaniel Hawthorne Academy in the San Antonio Independent School District is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding during the 2023-2024 school year; and WHEREAS, Named after renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne Academy opened its doors in 1923 as one of San Antonio ISD's eight original junior high schools, and it earned the distinction of being part of the first system of junior high schools to be built from the ground up in the United States; it became an elementary school in 1975 and then an internal charter academy in 2001; and WHEREAS, Today, Hawthorne Academy serves students in kindergarten through the eighth grade, and it benefits from the able guidance of its principal, Kristina L. Smith; the school features a program specialization in fine arts as well as a comprehensive curriculum focused on the development of academic and leadership skills, and it also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including band, coding club, theater arts, and athletics; and WHEREAS, Over the course of the last century, Hawthorne Academy has provided area youth with a strong educational foundation on which to build, and it has made a lasting and positive impact in the lives of generations of San Antonio residents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the centennial of Nathaniel Hawthorne Academy in San Antonio and extend to all those associated with the school sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for the academy as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
