| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed civil rights advocate drew |

| 6 | 6 | | to a close with the passing of Janice Elaine Winkley Gore of Dallas |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | on November 17, 2023, at the age of 77; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The former Janice Winkley was born in Dallas on |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | February 16, 1946, to Milton Winkley and Naomi Doss; following her |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | graduation from James Madison High School in 1963, she continued |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | her education at Arlington State College; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Gore emerged as a pivotal figure during the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | civil rights movement in Dallas; demonstrating an unwavering |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | commitment to justice and equality, she was an engaged member of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | NAACP Youth Council and participated in protests against the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | segregation of the State Fair of Texas and of public facilities; she |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | went on to advocate for the rights of African Americans across the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | South, working in behalf of political campaigns and collaborating |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | with such prominent figures as Philadelphia mayor Dr. W. Wilson |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Goode Sr., Texas governor Ann Richards, and the Reverend Jesse |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Jackson; in her later years, she owned a Texas Caribbean |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | restaurant; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Gore treasured the love |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and support of her family, which included her three sons, Terrence, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Todd, and Xavier, and her four grandchildren; moreover, she was |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | blessed with a wide circle of friends; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A woman of great compassion and vision who |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | championed the rights of her fellow citizens, Janice Gore inspired |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | others to help create a more equitable society, and her legacy will |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | continue to resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
