H.R. No. 84 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed civil rights advocate drew to a close with the passing of Janice Elaine Winkley Gore of Dallas on November 17, 2023, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, The former Janice Winkley was born in Dallas on February 16, 1946, to Milton Winkley and Naomi Doss; following her graduation from James Madison High School in 1963, she continued her education at Arlington State College; and WHEREAS, Ms. Gore emerged as a pivotal figure during the civil rights movement in Dallas; demonstrating an unwavering commitment to justice and equality, she was an engaged member of the NAACP Youth Council and participated in protests against the segregation of the State Fair of Texas and of public facilities; she went on to advocate for the rights of African Americans across the South, working in behalf of political campaigns and collaborating with such prominent figures as Philadelphia mayor Dr. W. Wilson Goode Sr., Texas governor Ann Richards, and the Reverend Jesse Jackson; in her later years, she owned a Texas Caribbean restaurant; and WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Gore treasured the love and support of her family, which included her three sons, Terrence, Todd, and Xavier, and her four grandchildren; moreover, she was blessed with a wide circle of friends; and WHEREAS, A woman of great compassion and vision who championed the rights of her fellow citizens, Janice Gore inspired others to help create a more equitable society, and her legacy will continue to resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Janice Elaine Winkley Gore and extend deepest condolences to the members of her family: to her mother, Naomi Doss Jackson; to her sons, Terrence Gore, Todd Gore, and Xavier Gore; to her grandchildren, Michael, Saniyah, Branden, and Michelle; to her siblings, Joyce Ellis and her husband, Ronnie, Joan Jackson Bouldin and her husband, David, and James Paul Jackson and his wife, Zakia; to her nieces, Pamela Sherman and Tehra Bouldin; to her nephews, Richard Sherman and Kenneth Brown; to her bonus daughters, Mylissa Gore, Rachael Gore, and Rochelle Rowe; and to all others who mourn her passing; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Janice Gore.
