57 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
68 WHEREAS, The cattle industry has long been a cornerstone of
79 Texas' agricultural economy, contributing billions of dollars
810 annually, providing thousands of jobs, and sustaining the state's
911 vibrant ranching culture; and
1012 WHEREAS, Steak products, particularly prime cuts like the
1113 tomahawk rib-eye steak, stand as one of the most prominent foods
1214 associated with Texas, a status that reflects the importance of
1315 beef production to the state's history and development; and
1416 WHEREAS, During the late 19th century, rapidly growing urban
1517 centers in the northern and western United States significantly
1618 increased the demand for beef, spurring the era of cattle drives;
1719 Texas ranchers, seeking profitable markets, organized
1820 long-distance drives to transport cattle to railheads and
1921 facilitate the shipment of beef to meet the nation's needs; and
2022 WHEREAS, Today, Texas is the leading producer of beef in the
2123 United States with over 12.2 million head of cattle, more than
2224 double the number in the second-ranking state; the beef industry is
2325 vital to the state's economy, with cattle production accounting for
2426 a significant portion of agricultural output and bringing in
2527 millions of dollars in agricultural export revenue each year; and
2628 WHEREAS, Texas is the birthplace of many iconic culinary
2729 traditions, including those tied to cattle drives, chuck wagons,
2830 and steak houses, all of which have cemented steak as an integral
2931 part of the state's culture and cuisine; the food service industry
3032 is the largest private employer in the state, providing over 1.46
3133 million jobs, including many in steak houses and dining
3234 establishments where high-quality beef remains a central part of
3335 the menu; and
3436 WHEREAS, The tomahawk rib-eye steak is a cut of rib-eye steak
3537 that has an unusually long rib bone attached and is thought to
3638 resemble a tomahawk in shape; and
3739 WHEREAS, Many of the tomahawk rib-eye steaks enjoyed by
3840 diners, both historically and in the present day, came from cattle
3941 that were raised on the sprawling ranches of Texas and should,
4042 therefore, be recognized as products of the Lone Star State; and
4143 WHEREAS, Designating the tomahawk rib-eye steak as the
4244 official State Steak of Texas would be a fitting tribute to the
4345 legacy of Texas as the nation's beef leader, and it would reflect
4446 the importance of steak to the state's identity; now, therefore, be
4547 it
4648 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
4749 hereby designate the tomahawk rib-eye steak as the official State
4850 Steak of Texas; and, be it further
4951 RESOLVED, That the tomahawk rib-eye steak be recognized as a
5052 symbol of Texas' enduring agricultural heritage, the state's
5153 economic vitality, and the contributions of the ranchers, farmers,
5254 and chefs who have shaped the state's iconic food culture; and, be
5355 it further
5456 RESOLVED, That the Texas Legislature recognize the central
5557 role of the beef industry in driving economic growth, employment,
5658 and cultural pride in Texas; and, be it further
5759 RESOLVED, That the Texas Legislature direct the Texas
5860 Department of Agriculture to promote the tomahawk rib-eye steak as
5961 part of the state's ongoing efforts to support Texas beef and
6062 agricultural products; and, be it further
6163 RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward an
6264 official copy of this resolution to the commissioner of the Texas
6365 Department of Agriculture.
