10 | 11 | | States of America at the Capitol, whereby the Republic of Texas |

12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, President Jones, through his leadership and |

13 | 14 | | diplomacy on behalf of the Republic, became known as the "architect |
---|
14 | 15 | | of annexation," and he concluded the ceremony in this final act by |
---|
15 | 16 | | stating that "the Republic of Texas is no more"; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones served as the fourth and final President |
---|
17 | 18 | | of the Republic of Texas from December 9, 1844, to February 19, |
---|
18 | 19 | | 1846; and |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones previously served the Republic of Texas |
---|
20 | 21 | | as an advocate for Independence, a Congressman, Senator, Secretary |
---|
21 | 22 | | of State, and Minister to the United States; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones was a soldier and surgeon in the Texas |

23 | 24 | | Army and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, where Texas won its |

24 | 25 | | Independence from Mexico; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones further contributed to Texas by helping |

26 | 27 | | to found the Texas Medical Association, Holland Lodge No. 36 in |

27 | 28 | | Brazoria, the Grand Lodge of Texas, and the Philosophical Society |

28 | 29 | | of Texas; and |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones's gravesite is located at the historic |

30 | 31 | | Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Anson Jones exemplified the same spirit and yearning |

32 | 33 | | for liberty as the founders of our Republic and State, and the |

33 | 34 | | anniversary of this historic ceremony provides a fitting |

34 | 35 | | opportunity to celebrate and honor his contributions to Texas and |
