H.R. No. 298 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, On February 19, 1846, Texas President Anson Jones presided over a formal ceremony completing annexation by lowering the flag of the Republic of Texas and raising the flag of the United States of America at the Capitol, whereby the Republic of Texas ceased and the State of Texas commenced; and WHEREAS, President Jones, through his leadership and diplomacy on behalf of the Republic, became known as the "architect of annexation," and he concluded the ceremony in this final act by stating that "the Republic of Texas is no more"; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones served as the fourth and final President of the Republic of Texas from December 9, 1844, to February 19, 1846; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones previously served the Republic of Texas as an advocate for Independence, a Congressman, Senator, Secretary of State, and Minister to the United States; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones was a soldier and surgeon in the Texas Army and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, where Texas won its Independence from Mexico; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones further contributed to Texas by helping to found the Texas Medical Association, Holland Lodge No. 36 in Brazoria, the Grand Lodge of Texas, and the Philosophical Society of Texas; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones's gravesite is located at the historic Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas; and WHEREAS, Anson Jones exemplified the same spirit and yearning for liberty as the founders of our Republic and State, and the anniversary of this historic ceremony provides a fitting opportunity to celebrate and honor his contributions to Texas and its people, past and present; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 19, 2025, as President Anson Jones Day at the State Capitol.
