7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder has ably guided |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in Macon, Georgia, Nelson Linder served in the |
---|
10 | 11 | | U.S. Army Signal Corps before moving to Austin in 1981; he completed |
---|
11 | 12 | | his bachelor's degree in personnel management and industrial |
---|
12 | 13 | | relations at Huston-Tillotson University and embarked on a career |
---|
13 | 14 | | in the insurance industry; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Linder is a descendant of George Linder, one of |
---|
15 | 16 | | the Original 33 Black legislators elected to the Georgia General |
---|
16 | 17 | | Assembly during Reconstruction; following in his |
---|
17 | 18 | | great-grandfather's tradition of civil rights advocacy, Mr. Linder |
---|
18 | 19 | | founded the Garvey/Allen/Washington Project in 1992 to promote |
---|
19 | 20 | | social justice in keeping with the philosophies of Marcus Garvey, |
---|
20 | 21 | | Richard Allen, and Booker T. Washington; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Elected president of the Austin NAACP in 2000, |
---|
22 | 23 | | Mr. Linder has been an important voice for the Black community and |
---|
23 | 24 | | human rights; he has been interviewed on issues impacting minority |
---|
24 | 25 | | communities by numerous media outlets, including The Washington |
---|
25 | 26 | | Post, CNN, and BET, as well as state and local media; his efforts in |
---|
26 | 27 | | response to police brutality have received national recognition, |
---|
27 | 28 | | and he has also worked tirelessly in behalf of educational equity |
---|
28 | 29 | | and economic advancement; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Linder's role in establishing the African |
---|
30 | 31 | | American Quality of Life Initiative in 2005 led to the creation of |
---|
31 | 32 | | the African American Resource Advisory Commission the following |
---|
32 | 33 | | year; moreover, he has encouraged political engagement as a host of |
---|
33 | 34 | | "Wake Up Call (Empowerment Mode)," a KAZI radio talk show focusing |
---|
34 | 35 | | on solutions to challenges confronting African Americans; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, A committed champion of his community, Nelson Linder |

36 | 37 | | has done much to bring progress and positive change to Central |
---|
37 | 38 | | Texas, and his contributions have earned the deep admiration and |
---|
38 | 39 | | appreciation of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby honor Nelson Linder for his 25 years of service |

41 | 42 | | as president of the Austin NAACP and extend to him sincere best |

42 | 43 | | wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
