67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder has ably guided
89 the organization for 25 years; and
910 WHEREAS, Born in Macon, Georgia, Nelson Linder served in the
1011 U.S. Army Signal Corps before moving to Austin in 1981; he completed
1112 his bachelor's degree in personnel management and industrial
1213 relations at Huston-Tillotson University and embarked on a career
1314 in the insurance industry; and
1415 WHEREAS, Mr. Linder is a descendant of George Linder, one of
1516 the Original 33 Black legislators elected to the Georgia General
1617 Assembly during Reconstruction; following in his
1718 great-grandfather's tradition of civil rights advocacy, Mr. Linder
1819 founded the Garvey/Allen/Washington Project in 1992 to promote
1920 social justice in keeping with the philosophies of Marcus Garvey,
2021 Richard Allen, and Booker T. Washington; and
2122 WHEREAS, Elected president of the Austin NAACP in 2000,
2223 Mr. Linder has been an important voice for the Black community and
2324 human rights; he has been interviewed on issues impacting minority
2425 communities by numerous media outlets, including The Washington
2526 Post, CNN, and BET, as well as state and local media; his efforts in
2627 response to police brutality have received national recognition,
2728 and he has also worked tirelessly in behalf of educational equity
2829 and economic advancement; and
2930 WHEREAS, Mr. Linder's role in establishing the African
3031 American Quality of Life Initiative in 2005 led to the creation of
3132 the African American Resource Advisory Commission the following
3233 year; moreover, he has encouraged political engagement as a host of
3334 "Wake Up Call (Empowerment Mode)," a KAZI radio talk show focusing
3435 on solutions to challenges confronting African Americans; and
3536 WHEREAS, A committed champion of his community, Nelson Linder
3637 has done much to bring progress and positive change to Central
3738 Texas, and his contributions have earned the deep admiration and
3839 appreciation of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby honor Nelson Linder for his 25 years of service
4142 as president of the Austin NAACP and extend to him sincere best
4243 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4344 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4445 prepared for Mr. Linder as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4546 House of Representatives.
