H.R. No. 350 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder has ably guided the organization for 25 years; and WHEREAS, Born in Macon, Georgia, Nelson Linder served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps before moving to Austin in 1981; he completed his bachelor's degree in personnel management and industrial relations at Huston-Tillotson University and embarked on a career in the insurance industry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Linder is a descendant of George Linder, one of the Original 33 Black legislators elected to the Georgia General Assembly during Reconstruction; following in his great-grandfather's tradition of civil rights advocacy, Mr. Linder founded the Garvey/Allen/Washington Project in 1992 to promote social justice in keeping with the philosophies of Marcus Garvey, Richard Allen, and Booker T. Washington; and WHEREAS, Elected president of the Austin NAACP in 2000, Mr. Linder has been an important voice for the Black community and human rights; he has been interviewed on issues impacting minority communities by numerous media outlets, including The Washington Post, CNN, and BET, as well as state and local media; his efforts in response to police brutality have received national recognition, and he has also worked tirelessly in behalf of educational equity and economic advancement; and WHEREAS, Mr. Linder's role in establishing the African American Quality of Life Initiative in 2005 led to the creation of the African American Resource Advisory Commission the following year; moreover, he has encouraged political engagement as a host of "Wake Up Call (Empowerment Mode)," a KAZI radio talk show focusing on solutions to challenges confronting African Americans; and WHEREAS, A committed champion of his community, Nelson Linder has done much to bring progress and positive change to Central Texas, and his contributions have earned the deep admiration and appreciation of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby honor Nelson Linder for his 25 years of service as president of the Austin NAACP and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Linder as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
