| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The American Jewish community traces its roots to |

| 11 | 12 | | 1654, when a group of 23 Jewish men, women, and children migrated to |

| 12 | 13 | | New York from Recife, Brazil, to escape the threat of persecution; |

| 13 | 14 | | during the more than 350 years that have followed, Jewish Americans |

| 14 | 15 | | have played an integral role in our nation's development and have |

| 15 | 16 | | demonstrated their commitment to their country and their |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | communities in myriad ways; only a few years after the American |

| 17 | 18 | | Jewish community celebrated its 350th anniversary, May was |

| 18 | 19 | | proclaimed as Jewish American Heritage Month by President George W. |

| 19 | 20 | | Bush in 2006; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Throughout our history, Jewish Americans have |

| 21 | 22 | | served in government and the military, have headed universities and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | corporations, and have upheld the rule of law as members of the U.S. |

| 23 | 24 | | Supreme Court; they have made significant advancements in science |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | and medicine and won Nobel Prizes for their discoveries, and they |

| 25 | 26 | | have immeasurably enriched American culture through their |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | collective achievements in art, literature, music, and other |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | creative arenas; the members of Jewish organizations in Texas are |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | working to build on the legacy of the countless Jews from across the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | state who have made significant contributions to society, culture, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | and industry; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since the time of our country's founding, Jewish |

| 32 | 33 | | Americans have distinguished themselves in numerous areas of |

| 33 | 34 | | endeavor, and it is fitting to acknowledge the role that they |

| 34 | 35 | | continue to play in furthering the prosperity and quality of life of |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
