H.R. No. 461 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Renowned Texas musician and actor Lyle Lovett is visiting the State Capitol on March 18, 2025, providing a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to his myriad achievements; and WHEREAS, Lyle Lovett was raised on a horse ranch in Klein, a town named after his great-great-grandfather, an early German settler of the area; in ninth grade at Klein High School, he joined his first band with his fellow FFA members, but he did not begin writing songs until he attended Texas A&M University; following graduation, he went on to study and play music in Germany; after returning home, he earned a following on stages across the state before further pursuing a music career in Nashville; he signed with MCA/Curb Records in 1986, and later that year, he released his eponymous debut, which spawned five singles that reached the Top-40 country charts; his popular second album, Pontiac, moved beyond the traditions of country and western with a blend of pop, jazz, blues, swing, and rock and roll that became his unique sound; to support the album, he formed His Large Band, a modified big band that included the gospel-trained backup singer Francine Reed; the group joined him for the recording of his third album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, which achieved gold certification; and WHEREAS, After moving to Los Angeles, Mr. Lovett acted in the Robert Altman films The Player and Short Cuts, and in 2000, he released the soundtrack of Dr.T. & the Women for the famed director; the '90s also saw the release of I Love Everybody, a collection of songs Mr. Lovett wrote in the early stages of his career, The Road to Ensenada, which peaked at No. 4 on the country charts, and Step Inside This House, a collection of covers that highlighted the works of other Texas artists, such as his longtime college friend, Robert Earl Keen; Mr. Lovett has received four Grammy Awards and has published several albums on the Lost Highway imprint along the way, and he has continued to appear in film and television and tour with and without His Large Band as well as the Acoustic Group in Texas and beyond; and WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Lovett received an honorary doctorate from the University of Houston for his extensive philanthropic work, which has included support of the Texas A&M community and for organizations such as The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, and Houston Ride for Kids; he maintains his roots in Klein, where he lives with his wife, April Kimble, and their twins, Ella and Will, in his grandparents' old house; he is a congregant of Trinity Klein Lutheran Church, which his great-great-grandfather co-founded; and WHEREAS, With his distinctive sound, masterful songwriting, and vibrant live performances, Lyle Lovett has earned a special place in the pantheon of artists from the Lone Star State, and his outstanding accomplishments are a source of tremendous pride to the Klein community and his fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby honor Lyle Lovett for his contributions and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Lovett as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
