H.R. No. 760 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Residents of Kenedy are gathering on April 9, 2025, to celebrate City of Kenedy Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The town's modern-day site was bequeathed to Carlos Martínez as part of a royal Spanish land grant in 1788; located along the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, the community was established in 1886 as Kenedy Junction by chief SA&AP benefactor Mifflin Kenedy; its post office opened in March 1887, and its name was shortened to Kenedy three months later; and WHEREAS, The town experienced significant growth as a trade and business center during the railroad era, and it established a depot, a cotton gin, and a number of newspapers; in 1894, the Kenedy Independent School District was organized with 68 students, and the town's first bank opened its doors nearly a decade later; in 1910, the community was formally incorporated with a population of approximately 1,150 residents; and WHEREAS, Today, Kenedy remains an economic focal point for Karnes County, which benefits from the farming, ranching, oil, gas, and uranium industries; currently home to more than 3,400 residents, the self-proclaimed "flax capital of Texas" is centrally located between the cities of San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Victoria, and it is at the epicenter of the Eagle Ford Shale; and WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build an even brighter future, residents of Kenedy are justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to recognize the city's contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 9, 2025, as City of Kenedy Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation.
