| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sophia Varela, a fifth-grade student at Franklin |

| 9 | 9 | | Elementary School in San Antonio ISD, was selected to interview |

| 10 | 10 | | civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez during Hispanic Heritage Month; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In preparation for the interview, Sophia learned how |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | at the age of just eight years old, Ms. Mendez became a plaintiff in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Mendez v. Westminster, a lawsuit that paved the way for Brown v. |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | outlawed racial segregation in public schools nationwide; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Sophia was offered the opportunity to interview |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Ms. Mendez by the scholastic news service News-O-Matic; she has |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | further distinguished herself as a member of the safety patrol |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | guard and student council at Franklin Elementary; in addition, she |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | attends ballet folklórico classes, and she is involved in Girls on |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Run, a nonprofit that helps young girls develop their |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | emotional, social, and physical skills; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Sophia Varela has brought great credit to her school |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and her community, and the commitment to excellence that she has |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | demonstrated is certain to open the way to a bright and promising |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | future for this fine young Texan; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Sophia Varela on being selected to |

| 29 | 29 | | interview civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez and extend to her sincere |
