No. 904 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Sophia Varela, a fifth-grade student at Franklin Elementary School in San Antonio ISD, was selected to interview civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez during Hispanic Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, In preparation for the interview, Sophia learned how at the age of just eight years old, Ms. Mendez became a plaintiff in Mendez v. Westminster, a lawsuit that paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that outlawed racial segregation in public schools nationwide; and WHEREAS, Sophia was offered the opportunity to interview Ms. Mendez by the scholastic news service News-O-Matic; she has further distinguished herself as a member of the safety patrol guard and student council at Franklin Elementary; in addition, she attends ballet folklórico classes, and she is involved in Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that helps young girls develop their emotional, social, and physical skills; and WHEREAS, Sophia Varela has brought great credit to her school and her community, and the commitment to excellence that she has demonstrated is certain to open the way to a bright and promising future for this fine young Texan; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Sophia Varela on being selected to interview civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Varela as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
