77 AN ACT
88 relating to the development of a standard method of computing a
99 student's high school grade point average.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Sections 28.0252(a) and (b), Education Code, are
1212 amended to read as follows:
1313 (a) The commissioner shall [may] develop a standard method
1414 of computing a student's high school grade point average that
1515 provides for additional weight to be given to each honors course,
1616 advanced placement course, international baccalaureate course,
1717 OnRamps dual enrollment course, or dual credit course completed by
1818 a student. The method must provide for an equal amount of
1919 additional weight to be given to an advanced placement course, an
2020 international baccalaureate course, an OnRamps dual enrollment
2121 course, and a dual credit course.
2222 (b) A [If the commissioner develops a standard method under
2323 this section, a] school district shall use the standard method
2424 developed by the commissioner under Subsection (a) to compute a
2525 student's high school grade point average.
2626 SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date
2727 of this Act, the commissioner of education shall develop a standard
2828 method of computing a student's high school grade point average as
2929 required by Section 28.0252(a), Education Code, as amended by this
3030 Act.
3131 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3232 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3333 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3434 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3535 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
