69 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
710 WHEREAS, Texas School for the Deaf alumnus Robert Rives was a
811 dedicated educator and a trailblazing figure in the state's deaf
912 and hard of hearing community; and
1013 WHEREAS, Mr. Rives became the first TSD alumnus to attend the
1114 prestigious National College, which is today known as Gallaudet
1215 University, in Washington, D.C.; following his graduation in 1893,
1316 he embarked on a rewarding career as a teacher at TSD that spanned
1417 more than four decades; he also served as the school's first
1518 football coach from 1894 to 1898, achieving a record of 10-8-1;
1619 among his many honors, he was inducted into the Texas School for the
1720 Deaf Alumni Association Hall of Fame in the sports category in 1999;
1821 and
1922 WHEREAS, Robert Rives continues to be a source of inspiration
2023 to young athletes at the Texas School for the Deaf, and the naming
2124 of the TSD middle school gymnasium in his honor would be a fitting
2225 tribute to his legacy; now, therefore, be it
2326 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
2427 hereby direct the Texas School for the Deaf to name its middle
2528 school gymnasium the Robert Rives Gymnasium; and, be it further
2629 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
2730 copy of this resolution to the Governing Board of the Texas School
2831 for the Deaf.
