                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 13
 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Brownsville are
 gathering in Austin on January 29, 2025, to celebrate Brownsville
 Day at the State Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, The southernmost city in Texas, Brownsville has
 played an important role in the state's storied history; during
 the Mexican-American War, a military fort was constructed at the
 site, and soon after, it was named Fort Brown in honor of Major
 Jacob Brown, who died during an attack on the stronghold; the
 area became part of the state of Texas with the signing of the
 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and five years later, it was
 officially incorporated as Brownsville; the city also served as a
 hub for trade with Mexico during the Civil War, and in the
 following decades, its economy benefited from the cattle and
 transportation industries; and
 WHEREAS, Today, Brownsville is the largest city in the Rio
 Grande Valley, spanning nearly 150 square miles and boasting a
 population of approximately 185,000; the city serves as the
 county seat of Cameron County, and it has built a reputation as a
 leader in innovation, space exploration, and cross-border trade;
 the city has also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to
 sustainable growth, economic development, and enhancing the
 quality of life for its residents; and
 WHEREAS, Brownsville has fostered a vibrant culture that
 reflects the enduring partnership between the United States and
 Mexico; the city hosts a number of festivals and events to
 celebrate its Mexican American heritage and traditions, and it
 works to strengthen the bonds of unity, friendship, and shared
 purpose between residents on both sides of the Rio Grande; and
 WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to
 build an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are
 justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to
 honor their contributions to the progress and prosperity of the
 Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
 Legislature, hereby recognize January 29, 2025, as Brownsville
 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
 delegation.
