SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 218 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Heritage Center of Cherokee County Museum in celebrating the dedication of a sculpture of Governor Jim Hogg on March 23, 2025; and WHEREAS, This remarkable sculpture, located at the Heritage Center of Cherokee County Museum in Rusk, serves to celebrate and preserve the legacy of James Stephen "Jim" Hogg, who was born in Rusk on March 24, 1851, and was the first native-born Texan to serve as governor of Texas; and WHEREAS, The inspiration for the sculpture arose from Governor Hogg's final speech, in which he declared public office to be an earned distinction and unwavering morality in government as the strongest defense against political corruption; and WHEREAS, Design and fundraising efforts for the sculpture began in March of 2024, and through the generous contributions of Rusk's pioneer families and other community supporters, the sculpture and three cast iron plaques commemorating Governor Hogg and the sculpture's sponsors were officially unveiled in January of 2025; and WHEREAS, The Heritage Center of Cherokee County Museum's board of directors, including president Betty MarContell and members Stephanie Caveness, Jim Cromwell, Rachel Loden, and Kevin Gentry, were instrumental in the success of this project and of the museum, and it is indeed fitting that the board and the museum's docents and donors be recognized for their dedication to sharing the storied history of Cherokee County; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby commend the Heritage Center of Cherokee County Museum and all associated with the museum for their many contributions to preserving Texas history and extend to them best wishes for a successful dedication ceremony; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
