7+ SENATE RESOLUTION
28 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
39 recognize May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the State
410 Capitol; and
511 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of
612 dementia, is estimated to affect nearly seven million Americans
713 and more than 460,000 Texans; it is a progressive
814 neurodegenerative condition that is characterized by the
915 accumulation of abnormal proteins and the gradual deterioration
1016 of neurons in the brain, which leads to memory loss and varying
1117 degrees of disability in the individuals it affects; and
1218 WHEREAS, The sixth most common cause of death in the United
1319 States, Alzheimer's disease has no existing cure, and treatments
1420 are aimed at slowing its advancement and improving the quality of
1521 life of those impacted by the disease; and
1622 WHEREAS, By age 65, one in nine Americans will develop
1723 Alzheimer's disease, and this figure increases to one in three by
1824 the age of 85; as the disease progresses, individuals can exhibit
1925 severe cognitive and physical impairments and may require
2026 around-the-clock assistance with daily tasks; more than one
2127 million devoted caregivers in Texas provide unpaid, at-home care
2228 for family members or loved ones who are Alzheimer's patients,
2329 and the indirect effects on business and the labor market result
2430 in tremendous losses in human capital; and
2531 WHEREAS, With the number of Texans living with Alzheimer's
2632 disease projected to grow substantially by 2030, developing new
2733 treatments and expanding research efforts has become an ever more
2834 urgent priority, and increasing knowledge and awareness of this
2935 devastating disease provides families and communities the
3036 opportunity to better plan for the future and access treatment,
3137 research trials, and caregiving support; now, therefore, be it
3238 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
3339 Legislature, hereby recognize May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's
3440 Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the families and
3541 caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease on their
3642 tireless efforts to provide care and the researchers and medical
3743 professionals who work to understand, treat, and develop a cure
3844 for Alzheimer's disease; and, be it further
3945 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4046 honor of Alzheimer's Advocacy Day.
