5 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of |

6 | 12 | | dementia, is estimated to affect nearly seven million Americans |
---|
7 | 13 | | and more than 460,000 Texans; it is a progressive |
---|
8 | 14 | | neurodegenerative condition that is characterized by the |
---|
9 | 15 | | accumulation of abnormal proteins and the gradual deterioration |
---|
10 | 16 | | of neurons in the brain, which leads to memory loss and varying |
---|
11 | 17 | | degrees of disability in the individuals it affects; and |
---|
12 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The sixth most common cause of death in the United |
---|
13 | 19 | | States, Alzheimer's disease has no existing cure, and treatments |
---|
14 | 20 | | are aimed at slowing its advancement and improving the quality of |
---|
15 | 21 | | life of those impacted by the disease; and |
---|
16 | 22 | | WHEREAS, By age 65, one in nine Americans will develop |
---|
17 | 23 | | Alzheimer's disease, and this figure increases to one in three by |
---|
18 | 24 | | the age of 85; as the disease progresses, individuals can exhibit |
---|
19 | 25 | | severe cognitive and physical impairments and may require |
---|
20 | 26 | | around-the-clock assistance with daily tasks; more than one |
---|
21 | 27 | | million devoted caregivers in Texas provide unpaid, at-home care |
---|
22 | 28 | | for family members or loved ones who are Alzheimer's patients, |
---|
23 | 29 | | and the indirect effects on business and the labor market result |
---|
24 | 30 | | in tremendous losses in human capital; and |
---|
25 | 31 | | WHEREAS, With the number of Texans living with Alzheimer's |
---|
26 | 32 | | disease projected to grow substantially by 2030, developing new |
---|
27 | 33 | | treatments and expanding research efforts has become an ever more |
---|
28 | 34 | | urgent priority, and increasing knowledge and awareness of this |
---|
29 | 35 | | devastating disease provides families and communities the |
---|
30 | 36 | | opportunity to better plan for the future and access treatment, |
---|
31 | 37 | | research trials, and caregiving support; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
---|
33 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's |
---|
34 | 40 | | Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the families and |
---|
35 | 41 | | caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease on their |
---|
36 | 42 | | tireless efforts to provide care and the researchers and medical |
---|
37 | 43 | | professionals who work to understand, treat, and develop a cure |
---|
38 | 44 | | for Alzheimer's disease; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
---|
40 | 46 | | honor of Alzheimer's Advocacy Day. |
