SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 422 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia, is estimated to affect nearly seven million Americans and more than 460,000 Texans; it is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and the gradual deterioration of neurons in the brain, which leads to memory loss and varying degrees of disability in the individuals it affects; and WHEREAS, The sixth most common cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer's disease has no existing cure, and treatments are aimed at slowing its advancement and improving the quality of life of those impacted by the disease; and WHEREAS, By age 65, one in nine Americans will develop Alzheimer's disease, and this figure increases to one in three by the age of 85; as the disease progresses, individuals can exhibit severe cognitive and physical impairments and may require around-the-clock assistance with daily tasks; more than one million devoted caregivers in Texas provide unpaid, at-home care for family members or loved ones who are Alzheimer's patients, and the indirect effects on business and the labor market result in tremendous losses in human capital; and WHEREAS, With the number of Texans living with Alzheimer's disease projected to grow substantially by 2030, developing new treatments and expanding research efforts has become an ever more urgent priority, and increasing knowledge and awareness of this devastating disease provides families and communities the opportunity to better plan for the future and access treatment, research trials, and caregiving support; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th Legislature, hereby recognize May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the families and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease on their tireless efforts to provide care and the researchers and medical professionals who work to understand, treat, and develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of Alzheimer's Advocacy Day.
