8+ WHEREAS, Rett Syndrome Awareness Month is being observed in
9+ October 2025 to promote better understanding of this developmental
10+ disorder; and
11+ WHEREAS, Every two hours, a child is born with Rett syndrome,
12+ a rare postnatal genetic neurological disorder that occurs almost
13+ exclusively in females; symptoms first appear in infants and
14+ toddlers between the ages of 6 to 18 months, followed by a period of
15+ regression when motor skills are gradually lost over time; and
1116 WHEREAS, Individuals with Rett syndrome require assistance
1217 with daily tasks throughout their lives; more than half of those
1318 diagnosed with the condition lose their ability to walk, and many
1419 suffer from impairments such as loss of speech, seizures,
1520 scoliosis, and irregular breathing patterns; one of the most
16- distinctive signs of Rett syndrome is near constant repetitive
17- hand movements while awake; and

1823 WHEREAS, Biomedical research suggests that neurological
19- symptoms may be reversed even decades after diagnosis;
20- scientists discovered the gene that causes Rett syndrome in 1999,

22- cure; the first FDA-approved treatment launched in 2023; and
23- WHEREAS, The International Rett Syndrome Foundation is one
24- of the world's largest private sources of funds for Rett syndrome

33- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
34- Legislature, hereby recognize October 2025 as Rett Syndrome
35- Awareness Month and encourage all Texans to learn more about
36- the condition.
