2020 This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Strengthening Aware-4
2121 ness and Funding Education for Grilling Act’’ or the 5
2222 ‘‘SAFE Grilling Act’’. 6

2727 Congress finds that, according to the National Fire 2
2828 Protection Association and the Consumer Product Safety 3
2929 Commission, during the years 2017 through 2021— 4
3030 (1) an average of 22,155 individuals each year 5
3131 went to an emergency room due to injuries involving 6
3232 grills; 7
3333 (2) gas grills were involved in an average of 8
3434 9,079 home fires each year, with 4,454 structure 9
3535 fires and 4,625 outdoor fires averaged annually; 10
3636 (3) leaks or breaks were a significant problem 11
3737 with gas grills, as 6 percent of structure fires related 12
3838 to gas grills and 15 percent of outdoor fires related 13
3939 to gas grills were caused by leaks or breaks; 14
4040 (4) more than 25 percent of structure fires re-15
4141 lated to grills began on an exterior balcony or open 16
4242 porch, 8 percent began when an outside wall caught 17
4343 fire, and 4 percent began with some type of struc-18
4444 tural member or framing; 19
4545 (5) July was the peak month for fires related 20
4646 to grills (16 percent of such fires), followed by June 21
4747 (14 percent), May (12 percent), and August (11 per-22
4848 cent); and 23
4949 (6) a grill that had not been cleaned was in-24
5050 volved in roughly 20 percent of fires related to grills. 25

5757 EQUIREMENT.—Not later than 1 year after the 3
5858 date of the enactment of this Act, the Consumer Product 4
5959 Safety Commission shall develop and implement a public 5
6060 awareness campaign to educate the public with respect 6
6161 to— 7
6262 (1) dangers associated with cooking using a 8
6363 grill; and 9
6464 (2) best practices for using a grill safely to pre-10
6565 vent injuries and fires. 11

6767 UTHORIZATION OFAPPROPRIATIONS.—There is 12
6868 authorized to be appropriated $5,000,000 to carry out this 13
6969 section. 14
