A BILL 
To direct the Consumer Product Safety Commission to de-
velop and implement a public awareness campaign with 
respect to grill safety, and for other purposes. 
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-1
tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, 2
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. 3
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Strengthening Aware-4
ness and Funding Education for Grilling Act’’ or the 5
‘‘SAFE Grilling Act’’. 6

SEC. 2. FINDINGS. 1
Congress finds that, according to the National Fire 2
Protection Association and the Consumer Product Safety 3
Commission, during the years 2017 through 2021— 4
(1) an average of 22,155 individuals each year 5
went to an emergency room due to injuries involving 6
grills; 7
(2) gas grills were involved in an average of 8
9,079 home fires each year, with 4,454 structure 9
fires and 4,625 outdoor fires averaged annually; 10
(3) leaks or breaks were a significant problem 11
with gas grills, as 6 percent of structure fires related 12
to gas grills and 15 percent of outdoor fires related 13
to gas grills were caused by leaks or breaks; 14
(4) more than 25 percent of structure fires re-15
lated to grills began on an exterior balcony or open 16
porch, 8 percent began when an outside wall caught 17
fire, and 4 percent began with some type of struc-18
tural member or framing; 19
(5) July was the peak month for fires related 20
to grills (16 percent of such fires), followed by June 21
(14 percent), May (12 percent), and August (11 per-22
cent); and 23
(6) a grill that had not been cleaned was in-24
volved in roughly 20 percent of fires related to grills. 25

SEC. 3. PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN WITH RESPECT TO 1
GRILL SAFETY. 2
(a) R
EQUIREMENT.—Not later than 1 year after the 3
date of the enactment of this Act, the Consumer Product 4
Safety Commission shall develop and implement a public 5
awareness campaign to educate the public with respect 6
to— 7
(1) dangers associated with cooking using a 8
grill; and 9
(2) best practices for using a grill safely to pre-10
vent injuries and fires. 11
(b) A
UTHORIZATION OFAPPROPRIATIONS.—There is 12
authorized to be appropriated $5,000,000 to carry out this 13
section. 14
