1313 RESOLUTION
1414 Expressing support for the designation of the week of May
1515 4, 2025, through May 10, 2025, as ‘‘Tardive Dyskinesia
1616 Awareness Week’’.
1717 Whereas many people living with serious mental illnesses (for
1818 example, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder,
1919 schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder) or gastro-
2020 intestinal disorders (for example, gastroparesis, upset
2121 stomach, nausea, and vomiting) may be treated with
2222 medications that work as dopamine receptor blocking
2323 agents, including antipsychotics and antiemetics;
2424 Whereas, while ongoing treatment with these medications can
2525 be necessary, prolonged use may be associated with
2626 tardive dyskinesia (TD), an involuntary movement dis-
2727 order that is characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal,

3131 and repetitive movements of the face, torso, limbs, and
3232 fingers or toes;
3333 Whereas even mild symptoms of TD can impact people phys-
3434 ically, socially, and emotionally;
3535 Whereas it is estimated that TD affects approximately
3636 600,000 people in the United States, and approximately
3737 65 percent of people with TD have not been diagnosed,
3838 making it important to raise awareness about the symp-
3939 toms;
4040 Whereas it is important that people taking these medications
4141 be monitored for TD by a health care provider, and reg-
4242 ular screening for TD is recommended by the American
4343 Psychiatric Association;
4444 Whereas clinical research has led to approval of treatments
4545 for adults with TD by the Food and Drug Administra-
4646 tion, and recognition and treatment of TD can make a
4747 positive impact in the lives of many people experiencing
4848 psychotic and mood disorders; and
4949 Whereas the House of Representatives can raise awareness of
5050 TD among the public and medical community: Now,
5151 therefore, be it
5252 Resolved, That the House of Representatives— 1
5353 (1) expresses support for the designation of 2
5454 ‘‘Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week’’; and 3
5555 (2) encourages each individual in the United 4
5656 States to become better informed about and aware 5
5757 of tardive dyskinesia. 6
