Stevenson 2 3 LONG TITLE 4 General Description: 5 This bill addresses illegal drug enforcement by the Department of Corrections. 6 Highlighted Provisions: 7 This bill: 8 ▸ requires the Department of Corrections to create a drug abuse and trafficking unit within 9 the department to combat illegal drug abuse and trafficking by inmates and offenders on 10 probation and parole and enhance coordination with law enforcement agencies. 11 Money Appropriated in this Bill: 12 None 13 Other Special Clauses: 14 None 15 Utah Code Sections Affected: 16 ENACTS: 17 64-13-51, Utah Code Annotated 1953 18 19 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah: 20 Section 1. Section 64-13-51 is enacted to read: 21 64-13-51 . Drug abuse and trafficking unit. 22 (1) The department shall create a drug abuse and trafficking unit within the department. 23 (2) The drug abuse and trafficking unit created in Subsection (1) shall: 24 (a) develop and implement strategies to combat drug abuse and trafficking by: 25 (i) offenders within correctional facilities and under the department's supervision; and 26 (ii) individuals working directly with, or in connection with, offenders within 27 correctional facilities or under the department's supervision; and 28 (b) enhance collaboration and information sharing between the department and law H.B. 323 Enrolled Copy 29 enforcement agencies throughout the state to combat drug abuse and trafficking by 30 the individuals listed in Subsections (2)(a)(i) and (ii). 31 Section 2. Effective Date. 32 This bill takes effect on May 7, 2025. - 2 -
