LONG TITLE

General Description:

This resolution urges the Division of State Parks to evaluate specific locations for
6 
designation as state parks, monuments, or campgrounds.

Highlighted Provisions:

This resolution:

▸ highlights Utah's need to develop and maintain state parks, monuments, and campgrounds
10 
to provide the people of Utah with outdoor recreational opportunities; and
11 
▸ urges the Division of State Parks to evaluate the Monte Cristo area and trust lands in the
12 
San Rafael Swell as potential new state parks, monuments, or campgrounds.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
19 
       WHEREAS, Utah's state parks, monuments, and campgrounds provide valuable outdoor
20 
recreational opportunities and protect significant natural and cultural resources for the people
21 
of Utah;
22 
       WHEREAS, Utah's growing population and vibrant tourism industry will require the state
23 
to develop new outdoor recreational opportunities and maintain existing state parks,
24 
monuments, and campgrounds;
25 
       WHEREAS, certain state trust lands and other areas may be suitable for designation as state
26 
parks, monuments, or campgrounds;
27 
       WHEREAS, the Monte Cristo area located in Cache, Rich, and Weber counties offers
28 
unique recreational opportunities that the Division of State Parks may evaluate for designation
29 
as a state park, monument, or campground;
30 
       WHEREAS, various school and institutional trust lands, including trust lands in the San

Rafael Swell, may present opportunities for public recreation while generating revenue for
32 
trust beneficiaries;
33 
       WHEREAS, the United States Forest Service has decommissioned campgrounds in the
34 
state due to the degradation of campground infrastructure, including the Sunset Campground
35 
in Farmington Canyon; and
36 
       WHEREAS, state lands and federal public lands could be enhanced and reclaimed for
37 
recreation and conservation purposes if put under state control:

       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
39 
Governor concurring therein, urges the Division of State Parks to evaluate recreational and
40 
scenic locations in the state, including the Monte Cristo area and trust lands in the San Rafael
41 
Swell, for designation as new state parks, monuments, and campgrounds.
