SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 401

Commending Hollin Meadows Elementary School.

WHEREAS, for 60 years, Hollin Meadows Elementary School of Fairfax County Public Schools has made an impact in the community by ensuring the academic, social, and emotional well-being of its students; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School was opened in 1965 and serves several historic neighborhoods in Fairfax County, including Gum Springs and Hollin Hills; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School is a diverse, multicultural school that welcomes students and staff from all over the world, boasting 20 different home languages among its families and staff members; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School is devoted to actively engaging its students in their learning, encouraging them to reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School provides assistance and guidance to its faculty and staff to foster their ability to make a difference in the lives of their students; and

WHEREAS, with a commitment to educational excellence, Hollin Meadows Elementary School became one of Fairfax County's first Science and Math Focus Schools in 1994 and one of the first schools in the county to have a full-day kindergarten program three years later; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School has developed an extensive outdoor learning space to create an environment in which students can interact with and learn about the natural world; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School has encouraged physical fitness by providing additional time for exercise at recess and fostered healthy lifestyle choices by creating a school garden where students can grow and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables; and

WHEREAS, in 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack visited Hollin Meadows Elementary School to present the school with a silver medal as part of the Obama administration's HealthierUS School Challenge and to highlight the school's ongoing achievements in supporting childhood fitness and nutrition; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School participates in the Get2Green program, integrating sustainability into the curriculum and fostering a love for nature and environmental stewardship among its students; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School has received a number of accolades over the years in recognition of its quality educational programs, including an Intel School of Distinction Award in the area of elementary mathematics in 2011; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Hollin Meadows Elementary School over the past 60 years are the result of the efforts of its students, the dedication of its teachers and staff, and the unwavering support of its families, parent-teacher association, and the entire Hollin Meadows Elementary School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Hollin Meadows Elementary School on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Hollin Meadows Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
