SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 265

Commending Virginia Natural Gas.

Agreed to by the Senate, February 19, 2025

 

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas, a distinguished utility provider that delivers safe and reliable natural gas to Southeastern Virginia, is celebrating 175 years of service in the Commonwealth in 2025; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas was originally chartered to light the streetlights of the City of Norfolk through an act passed by the General Assembly on January 11, 1850; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas provides natural gas service to 15 localities and serves over 310,000 customers, including families, schools, hospitals, churches, shipyards, restaurants, and small and large businesses in Southeastern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas delivers energy to more than 14 military installations, providing critical energy and reliability to support the nation's defense; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas supports more than 400 employees and more than 600 contractors, providing meaningful employment in the region; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas's employees are always on call, prioritizing safety as they serve all customers; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas is dedicated to making a positive impact on the community, with a strong belief in intentional corporate citizenship that guides their charitable giving, volunteerism, and employee engagement; and

WHEREAS, Virginia Natural Gas seeks to collaborate with community partners to create and support programming that empowers the underserved, addresses disparities, fosters economic vitality, and protects the environment in the region; and

WHEREAS, through many consolidations and mergers, Virginia Natural Gas eventually became part of the company known today as Southern Company Gas, a subsidiary of Southern Company; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Virginia Natural Gas hereby be commended for its legacy of more than 175 years of service to Virginians; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Virginia Natural Gas as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the organization's long history of service to communities throughout the Commonwealth.
