8	8	Relating to: celebrating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between
9	9	Ireland and the United States.
10	10	Whereas, on October 7, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge accepted the
11	11	credentials of Timothy Smiddy as Minister Plenipotentiary of the Irish Free State;
12	12	and
13	13	Whereas, as Smiddy noted in his address to President Coolidge, the United
14	14	States became the first nation to establish formal diplomatic relations with the Irish
15	15	Free State after its long struggle for existence; and
16	16	Whereas, Smiddy also noted that “there will always exist between the United
17	17	States and the Irish Free State feelings of deep friendship and high esteem”; and
18	18	Whereas, this prediction has proven true, as the two nations now celebrate a
19	19	century of mutual support and admiration; and
20	20	Whereas, Americans' ancestral ties to Ireland form the bedrock of this
21	21	relationship, with nearly one in 10 Americans—and more than 20 U.S.
22	22	presidents—claiming Irish forebears; and

41	41	Whereas, Irish immigrants' contributions throughout American history, from
42	42	raising skyscrapers to completing the transcontinental railroad, have also enriched
43	43	this relationship; and
44	44	Whereas, Americans joyously celebrate their ancestral, historical, and cultural
45	45	connections with Ireland each year on Saint Patrick's Day; and
46	46	Whereas, the two nations have both prospered economically, with American
47	47	companies employing over 200,000 people in Ireland and Irish companies employing
48	48	about 100,000 people in the United States; and
49	49	Whereas, state legislators seek to further strengthen the United States'
50	50	relationship with Ireland through the work of the American Irish State Legislators
51	51	Caucus; and
52	52	Whereas, the American Irish State Legislators Caucus welcomes anyone who
53	53	supports Ireland, no matter their ancestry or political affiliation; now, therefore, be
54	54	it
55	55	Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
56	56	Legislature recognizes October 2024 as the 100th anniversary of the diplomatic
57	57	relations between Ireland and the United States and looks forward to another
58	58	century of friendly relations between the two nations.
