Whereas, in 1846, the U.S. government gave permission to the Territory of Wisconsin to take the necessary steps to become a state; and Whereas, in 1846, a convention drafted a constitution that failed to be ratified by the territory's voters; and Whereas, a second constitutional convention met in the winter of 1847-48, which drafted a second constitution; and Whereas, the territory's voters ratified the constitution on March 13, 1848; and Whereas, on May 29, 1848, President Polk signed legislation that admitted Wisconsin to the union, granting Wisconsin statehood; and Whereas, Wisconsin, paying homage to its history in agriculture and mining, is called “America's Dairyland” and the “Badger State”; and Whereas, Wisconsin boasts an abundance of geographic beauty and natural resources, including over 15,000 lakes, 471,000 acres of state forests, and 60,000 acres of state parks; and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 - 2 - LRB-3406/1 JAG:klm 2023 - 2024 Legislature Whereas, Wisconsin today is home to over 5.8 million residents; and Whereas, Wisconsin has a proud history of 175 years and, as always, looks “Forward” to the future; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the legislature recognize that 2023 marks the 175th year of Wisconsin's statehood, reflect on Wisconsin's rich history, and look forward to the future of the state.
