Relating to: designating July 2023 as Disability Pride Month in Wisconsin.
Whereas, disability is a natural part of human life and human diversity that
should not compromise a person' s fundamental right to independence,
self-determination, or participation in public life; and
Whereas, the disabled community is the world's largest minority, making up an
estimated 15 percent of the world's population, including 61 million Americans and
more than 300,000 Wisconsinites; and
Whereas, disability intersects with many other identities, including race,
gender, and socioeconomic status, and touches every aspect of daily life, from health
care and housing to education and environmental justice; and
Whereas, disability is itself an extremely diverse identity, including physical
disabilities, neurodivergence, invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, psychiatric
disabilities, and sensory disabilities; and
Whereas, disabled activists have fought long and hard to break down barriers
to inclusion but nonetheless continue to face discrimination, segregation, and

inaccessible environments that prevent them from living fully and equitably in their
communities; and
Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination
on the basis of disability status and has helped ensure disabled people can access the
accommodations they need, was signed into law on July 26, 1990; and
Whereas, during the month of July, we celebrate the value, contributions, and
diverse life experiences of disabled Wisconsinites and reaffirm our commitment to
build a more equitable and inclusive state for all; now therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
Legislature designates July 2023 as Disability Pride Month in Wisconsin.
