4-AN ACT to amend 165.85 (5) (b) of the statutes; relating to: training expenses for officers.
5-The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in
6-senate and assembly, do enact as follows:
7-SECTION 1. 165.85 (5) (b) of the statutes is amended
8-to read:
9-165.85 (5) (b)  The board shall authorize the reim-
10-bursement payment to each political subdivision law
11-enforcement agencies of approved expenses incurred by
12-recruits who satisfactorily complete training at schools
13-certified by the board.  Reimbursement Payment of these
14-expenses for law enforcement officer, jail officer and
15-juvenile detention officer preparatory training shall be
16-for board approved tuition, living, and travel expenses.
17-Reimbursement Payment of approved expenses for com-
18-pletion of annual recertification training under sub. (4)
19-shall be provided to the law enforcement agency that
20-employs the officer and shall include at least $160 $320
21-per officer thereafter per year.  Funds may also be distrib-
22-uted for attendance at other training programs and cour-
23-ses or for training services on a priority basis to be
24-decided by the department of justice.
25-SECTION 1s.0Initial applicability.
26-(1)  PER OFFICER AMOUNT.  The treatment of s. 165.85
27-(5) (b), with respect to the dollar amount provided per
28-officer, first applies to training costs incurred on July 1,
29-2024.

14+AN ACT to amend 165.85 (5) (b) of the statutes; relating to: training expenses

16+Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
17+Current law requires officer recruits for law enforcement agencies, jails, or
18+juvenile detention facilities to complete preparatory training and for law
19+enforcement officers to complete annual recertification training. Under current law,
20+the Law Enforcement Standards Board authorizes the reimbursement to political
21+subdivisions of approved expenses. This bill requires LESB to pay the law
22+enforcement agency for the approved preparatory expenses. Under current law, the
23+approved expenses for annual recertification training must include at least $160 per
24+law enforcement officer. This bill increases the minimum amount per officer to $320
25+and specifies that the law enforcement agency that employs the officer be paid for the
26+approved expenses of the officer's annual recertification training.

28+enact as follows:
