4-AN ACT to amend 187.11 of the statutes; relating to: specifying Crossroads College as the entity in which the

6-The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in
7-senate and assembly, do enact as follows:
8-SECTION 1. 187.11 of the statutes is amended to read:
9-187.11  Property of Church of Christ or Christian
10-Church.  Whenever any local religious society of the
11-denomination known as the Church of Christ or the
12-Christian Church, which that accepts the Wisconsin
13-Christian Missionary Association Crossroads College, or
14-any predecessor or successor organization of Crossroads
15-College, as its missionary organization becomes defunct
16-or is dissolved, the property thereof shall vest in the Wis-
17-consin Christian Missionary Association, the state insti-
18-tution of said denomination Crossroads College, or any
19-successor organization of Crossroads College, and if
20-within 3 years from the date when such local society
21-becomes defunct or is dissolved it is reincorporated in the
22-manner prescribed in s. 187.01, the said property so
23-belonging to such defunct or dissolved local corporation
24-at the time of its dissolution shall vest in such new corpo-
25-ration.  Any local religious society shall be deemed
26-defunct within the meaning of this section when it shall
27-have ceased to maintain at least one regular service per
28-month for a period of 2 years.  Section 187.03 shall not
29-apply to or affect religious societies of the denomination
30-known as the Church of Christ or the Christian Church.

12+This bill updates an entity name in statutory provisions related to the
13+incorporation of religious organizations.
14+Current law provides a process for the members of a church or society of any
15+religious sect or denomination to organize a corporation for religious, charitable, or
16+educational purposes, and this corporation has the powers and privileges of a
17+nonstock (nonprofit) corporation. The corporation may purchase and hold real
18+property and personal property, and its secular business and temporal affairs are
19+managed by a board of trustees selected as provided in the bylaws.
20+Current law also specifies that if the Church of Christ accepts the Wisconsin
21+Christian Missionary Association as its missionary organization and the Church of
22+Christ becomes defunct or is dissolved, the Church of Christ's property vests in the
23+Wisconsin Christian Missionary Association. However, if within three years from
24+the date the Church of Christ becomes defunct or is dissolved it is reincorporated, its
25+property at the time of dissolution vests in the new corporation.

31+The bill replaces the Wisconsin Christian Missionary Association with
32+Crossroads College, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, or its successor, as the entity
33+in which the Church of Christ's property vests in the circumstances described above.
34+The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
35+enact as follows:
36+SECTION 1. 187.11 of the statutes is amended to read:
37+187.11 Property of Church of Christ or Christian Church. Whenever any
38+local religious society of the denomination known as the Church of Christ or the
39+Christian Church, which that accepts the Wisconsin Christian Missionary
40+Association Crossroads College, or any predecessor or successor organization of
41+Crossroads College, as its missionary organization becomes defunct or is dissolved,
42+the property thereof shall vest in the Wisconsin Christian Missionary Association,
43+the state institution of said denomination Crossroads College, or any successor
44+organization of Crossroads College, and if within 3 years from the date when such
45+local society becomes defunct or is dissolved it is reincorporated in the manner
46+prescribed in s. 187.01, the said property so belonging to such defunct or dissolved
47+local corporation at the time of its dissolution shall vest in such new corporation. Any
48+local religious society shall be deemed defunct within the meaning of this section
49+when it shall have ceased to maintain at least one regular service per month for a
50+period of 2 years. Section 187.03 shall not apply to or affect religious societies of the
51+denomination known as the Church of Christ or the Christian Church.
