3 | | - | ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION |
---|
4 | | - | |
---|
5 | | - | Relating to: designating Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and efforts to educate |
---|
6 | | - | people about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. |
---|
7 | | - | Whereas, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic cardiovascular disease |
---|
8 | | - | involving thickening of the heart muscle and can potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and |
---|
9 | | - | serious complications including heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and in rare cases sudden |
---|
10 | | - | cardiac death; and |
---|
11 | | - | Whereas, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease and can affect anyone regardless |
---|
12 | | - | of age, gender, or ethnicity with a reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in the general |
---|
13 | | - | population; and |
---|
14 | | - | Whereas, an estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the United States have HCM, yet 85 |
---|
15 | | - | percent of them may remain undiagnosed; and |
---|
16 | | - | Whereas, HCM shares symptoms with other common cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, |
---|
17 | | - | such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and fainting, making it difficult to |
---|
18 | | - | distinguish HCM from these other diseases; and |
---|
19 | | - | Whereas, all−cause mortality risk is three to four times higher in patients with HCM than that |
---|
20 | | - | of the general population; and |
---|
21 | | - | Whereas, knowing one’s medical history and any signs and symptoms of HCM is an important |
---|
22 | | - | first step in receiving an accurate diagnosis of HCM; and |
---|
23 | | - | Whereas, a healthcare provider must conduct a thorough screening with cardiac health |
---|
24 | | - | questions to help identify a risk of cardiac disorders both genetic and congenital; and |
---|
25 | | - | Whereas, a health−care provider may conduct several tests, including an echocardiogram, a |
---|
26 | | - | cardiac MRI, or genetic testing to confirm a family history of HCM, and must examine the heart to |
---|
27 | | - | diagnose HCM; and |
---|
28 | | - | Whereas, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for patients to work with their |
---|
29 | | - | healthcare provider to learn more about their disease and understand different management options, |
---|
30 | | - | including prescription medicines and surgical treatment options that may help; and |
---|
31 | | - | Whereas, the fourth Wednesday in February is an appropriate day to observe Hypertrophic |
---|
32 | | - | Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | | - | Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin Legislature designates |
---|
34 | | - | the fourth Wednesday in February of each year as “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day” |
---|
35 | | - | in Wisconsin in order to raise public awareness about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; and, be it |
---|
36 | | - | further |
---|
37 | | - | Resolved, That the Wisconsin Legislature acknowledges the critical importance of |
---|
38 | | - | hypertrophic cardiomyopathy awareness to improve cardiovascular health in Wisconsin; and, be it |
---|
39 | | - | further |
---|
40 | | - | Resolved, That the Wisconsin Legislature supports raising awareness of the consequences of |
---|
41 | | - | undiagnosed and untreated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the need to seek appropriate care for |
---|
42 | | - | hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a serious public health issue; and, be it further |
---|
43 | | - | Resolved, That the Wisconsin Legislature respectfully requests the Governor to issue |
---|
44 | | - | annually a proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in February in as “Hypertrophic 2023 Senate Joint Resolution 45 |
---|
45 | | - | − 2− |
