88 Whereas, August 15, 2023, marks the 76th anniversary of the effective date of
99 the India Independence Act on August 15, 1947, and the resulting establishment of
1010 India as a sovereign state independent from the United Kingdom; and
1111 Whereas, Indian citizens, people of Indian descent, and many others worldwide
1212 have celebrated India's Independence Day on August 15 each year since 1947; and
1313 Whereas, the celebration of India's Independence Day provides important
1414 opportunities to recognize and commemorate India's cultural diversity, extensive
1515 history, and the many historical and modern contributions of Indian immigrants and
1616 those of Indian descent to the past and present both in Wisconsin and across the
1717 world; and
1818 Whereas, IndiaFest Wisconsin has been held annually since 2013 and features
1919 hundreds of volunteers, thousands of attendees, and dozens of corporate sponsors all
2020 gathering to celebrate India's independence, culture, and heritage; and

3838 Whereas, a variety of sponsors, including the nonprofit organization Spindle
3939 India, Inc., have made such celebrations possible through generous donations of
4040 time, effort, and resources that expand cultural education, bring communities
4141 together, and promote collaboration between India and the United States; and
4242 Whereas, the continuing efforts of IndiaFest's organizers and volunteers each
4343 and every year represent invaluable contributions that have and will continue to
4444 advance cultural understanding of the Indian community and promote diversity and
4545 inclusion for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4646 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
4747 Legislature observes August 15, 2023, as India Day in Wisconsin.
