Referred to Committee on Senate Organization. Relating to: declaring May 2025 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month. Whereas, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of 13 inherited connective tissue disorders that together affect 1 in 5,000 people. Each type of EDS has its own set of symptoms, but some features are seen across all types of EDS, including overly flexible joints, hyperextensible skin, and fragile body tissues; and Whereas, hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) are inherited connective tissue disorders similar to EDS that cause overly flexible and unstable joints, injury, and pain; and Whereas, persons with EDS and HSD often have fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, abnormal blood pressure and heart rate, and other symptoms that interfere with function and quality of life; and Whereas, there is no cure for any type of EDS or HSD. The conditions are managed by addressing a person[s symptoms. Lack of awareness about EDS and HSD in Wisconsin and across the world stands in the way of the diagnosis, management, and research of these conditions; and Whereas, awareness of EDS and HSD by both medical professionals and the general public can help improve the lives of people living with EDS and HSD in Wisconsin; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That Wisconsin hereby declares May 2025 as Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month and encourages its citizens to observe the same.
