1-Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 214 CHAPTER 170Relative to the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy Didier M. Hurdle Memorial Highway. Hurdle Memorial Highway.This measure would designate a specified portion of Interstate 105 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy Didier M. Hurdle Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and the badge of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, The men and women of law enforcement have the unenviable task of guaranteeing the publics safety, and it is as difficult and dangerous as it is important, as evidenced by the death of Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy Didier M. Hurdle who was killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, Deputy Hurdle was shot and killed on Friday, November 25, 1977, in the community of Willowbrook, California at the intersection of South Oleander Avenue and East Knopf Street; andWHEREAS, Deputy Hurdle was shot and killed when he and a cadet trainee stopped a car containing suspected gang members, and as one of the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire, the cadet was wounded in the leg and shoulder, but was able to return fire; andWHEREAS, During the gun battle, Deputy Hurdle and the cadet were able to wound one of the suspects while the responding deputy sheriffs were able to follow the suspects blood trail and apprehend all of the suspects who were charged with murder of a police officer and possession of PCP; andWHEREAS, Deputy Hurdle, although wearing a ballistic vest, was shot in the shoulder and the bullet deflected downward into his chest causing his death from the wound; andWHEREAS, Deputy Hurdle was only 36 years of age at the time of his passing, and had served 8 years and 6 months and 10 days since his appointment as a deputy sheriff on May 15, 1969; andWHEREAS, Even today, more than 40 years since his passing, Deputy Sheriff Didier M. Hurdle is remembered by his fellow officers, colleagues, and his surviving family and loved ones who honor his memory annually; andWHEREAS, It is appropriate to pause to honor Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy Didier M. Hurdle, who made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his sworn duty, and to pay tribute to him, a fallen hero, by recalling his devotion, celebrating his life, and honoring his service; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of Interstate 105 between Interstate 110 (approximately post mile R 7.386) and the Long Beach Boulevard Undercrossing (approximately post mile R 11.506) in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy Didier M. Hurdle Memorial Highway; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and the badge of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
