1-Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 114 CHAPTER 227Relative to World Cup 2026. [ Filed with Secretary of State September 11, 2018. ] LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGESTSCR 114, Stern. World Cup 2026.This measure would declare that the State of California welcomes the hosting of World Cup 2026, would declare the states full support of local organizing committees in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles area to be selected as World Cup 2026 sites, and would encourage the Governor and all affected state departments to cooperate with those committees.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, The Fdration Internationale de Football Association, the world governing body for soccer, upon application of the United Bid Committee, which represents the soccer federations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has designated these three countries as the host region for World Cup 2026, the worlds largest single sporting event; andWHEREAS, The San Francisco Bay area and the Los Angeles area are bidding to become two of the 12 communities throughout North America that will host World Cup 2026 matches in June and July 2026; andWHEREAS, California is the United States west coast gateway to the international stage and within its jurisdiction offers the greatest range of ethnic heritage and diversity in the United States, with many of our people being born and raised in countries where soccer is the major sport; andWHEREAS, The State of California actively supported the conduct of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the 1994 World Cup in the United States, and the 2015 Special Olympic Games by passing appropriate legislation that was necessary to facilitate the conduct of these games; andWHEREAS, It is anticipated that hosting World Cup 2026 will result in a positive economic impact on the State of California while enhancing the international reputation of the state; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the State of California welcomes the hosting of World Cup 2026 and declares its full support of the efforts of the local organizing committees in the San Francisco Bay area and in the Los Angeles area to be selected as World Cup 2026 sites; and be it furtherResolved, That the Legislature encourages the Governor and all affected state departments to cooperate fully with World Cup 2026 organizing committees so that these cities will ultimately be selected as World Cup 2026 sites; and be it furtherResolved, That, upon these cities being selected as venue sites for World Cup 2026, the Governor and state agencies work with World Cup 2026 organizing committees to provide all of the necessary services to ensure a safe, successful, and enjoyable World Cup 2026 consistent with the kind of support that was provided in the 1994 World Cup that made for such a successful international sporting event.
