Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, the College Boards Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers pupils the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while in high school; andWHEREAS, Successful performance, by scoring a 3 or higher, on AP examinations qualifies pupils to receive college credit at colleges and universities in California and nationwide, representing millions of dollars in substantial college tuition savings for pupils and parents; andWHEREAS, Challenging AP curricula and examinations significantly contribute toward building a globally competitive career-ready workforce in California, the fifth largest economy in the world; andWHEREAS, California realizes the value of AP examinations to all pupils in their pursuit of higher education, including vulnerable pupil populations; andWHEREAS, Research shows that pupils in the AP Program are more likely to enroll in college, do well in their classes, graduate on time in four years, and are overall better prepared for college compared to their peers not in the AP Program; andWHEREAS, In 2018, 191,215 California high school pupils took 697,149 AP examinations with 468,859 of those examinations having scores of 3 or higher; andWHEREAS, The above figures represent continued growth in the number of public school pupils taking AP examinations and scoring 3 or higher on examinations in more than 30 subjects, including computer science; andWHEREAS, California ranked 5th in the nation for the percentage of its high school graduating class of 2018 that scored a 3 or higher on an AP examination during high school; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly commemorates May 23, 2019, as Advanced Placement Day; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
