28 | 22 | | 6 Kokomo, Indiana, graduated from Kokomo High School in |

29 | 23 | | 7 1967, and then joined the United States Army; |

30 | 24 | | 8 Whereas, Mills served as a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army |

31 | 25 | | 9 as a helicopter pilot, and he was deployed to Vietnam from |

32 | 26 | | 10 April 15, 1970, to April 14, 1971; |

33 | 27 | | 11 Whereas, On June 22, 1970, Mills was flying a Command and |

34 | 28 | | 12 Control helicopter when a request was made for an emergency |
---|
35 | 29 | | 13 medical evacuation; |
---|
36 | 30 | | 14 Whereas, Mills immediately reacted to the request and |
---|
37 | 31 | | 15 proceeded to the pickup point with a complete disregard for his |
---|
38 | 32 | | 16 personal safety as the point was under heavy enemy fire upon |
---|
39 | 33 | | 17 his arrival; |

40 | 34 | | 18 Whereas, Mills maneuvered his helicopter to make it a |
---|
41 | 35 | | 19 stationary target for enemy fire, shielding the extraction, and |
---|
42 | 36 | | 20 creating enough time for the wounded soldier to be placed |
---|
43 | 37 | | 21 aboard; |
---|
44 | 38 | | 22 Whereas, Through his timely actions, he was instrumental in |
---|
45 | 39 | | 23 saving the life of his fellow soldier and served as an inspiration |
---|
