2424 HOUSE CONCURRENT
2525 RESOLUTION No. ____
2626 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing April as
2727 2 Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
2828 3 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
2929 4 Whereas, Parkinson's disease, which affects up to
3030 5 approximately 20,000 people in Indiana and nearly 1 million
3131 6 people in the United States, is a chronic and progressive
3232 7 neurological disease caused by a lack of the chemical
3333 8 dopamine in the brain;
3434 9 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of
3535 10 death in the United States and has an estimated annual total
3636 11 cost of $51.9 billion per year, split evenly between medical
3737 12 costs and non-medical costs, such as lost wages and caregiver
3838 13 time and expenses;
3939 14 Whereas, It is important to educate Hoosiers about the
4040 15 symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including tremors, rigidity
4141 16 and bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability,
4242 17 shuffling gait, speech and swallowing disturbances, cognitive
4343 18 impairment and dementia, and difficulty with fine hand
4444 19 movements;
4545 20 Whereas, Since not everyone with Parkinson's disease has all
4646 21 of the associated symptoms, careful diagnosis is essential;
4747 22 Whereas, Research suggests that the cause of Parkinson's
4848 23 disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors,
4949 24 and at this time there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt
5050 25 the progression of the disease;
5151 2024 HC 1032/DI 140 2
5252 1 Whereas, There currently is no objective test to diagnose
5353 2 Parkinson's disease, and available treatments are limited in
5454 3 their ability to address patients' medical needs and remain
5555 4 effective over time;
5656 5 Whereas, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical
5757 6 professionals are working to improve the quality of life of
5858 7 persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families; and
5959 8 Whereas, Increased research, education, and community
6060 9 support services are needed to find more effective treatments
6161 10 and to provide access to quality care to those living with the
6262 11 disease today: Therefore,
6363 12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
6464 13 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
6565 14 the Senate concurring:
6666 15 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
6767 16 April as Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
6868 17 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
6969 18 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
7070 19 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
