26	26	1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing April as
27	27	2 Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
28	28	3 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
29	29	4 Whereas, Parkinson's disease, which affects up to
30	30	5 approximately 20,000 people in Indiana and nearly 1 million
31	31	6 people in the United States, is a chronic and progressive
32	32	7 neurological disease caused by a lack of the chemical
33	33	8 dopamine in the brain;
34	34	9 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of
35	35	10 death in the United States and has an estimated annual total
36	36	11 cost of $51.9 billion per year, split evenly between medical
37	37	12 costs and non-medical costs, such as lost wages and caregiver
38	38	13 time and expenses;
39	39	14 Whereas, It is important to educate Hoosiers about the
40	40	15 symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including tremors, rigidity
41	41	16 and bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability,
42	42	17 shuffling gait, speech and swallowing disturbances, cognitive
43	43	18 impairment and dementia, and difficulty with fine hand
44	44	19 movements;
45	45	20 Whereas, Since not everyone with Parkinson's disease has all
46	46	21 of the associated symptoms, careful diagnosis is essential;
47	47	22 Whereas, Research suggests that the cause of Parkinson's
48	48	23 disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors,
49	49	24 and at this time there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt
50	50	25 the progression of the disease;

52	52	1 Whereas, There currently is no objective test to diagnose
53	53	2 Parkinson's disease, and available treatments are limited in
54	54	3 their ability to address patients' medical needs and remain
55	55	4 effective over time;
56	56	5 Whereas, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical
57	57	6 professionals are working to improve the quality of life of
58	58	7 persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families; and
59	59	8 Whereas, Increased research, education, and community
60	60	9 support services are needed to find more effective treatments
61	61	10 and to provide access to quality care to those living with the
62	62	11 disease today: Therefore,
63	63	12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
64	64	13 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
65	65	14 the Senate concurring:
66	66	15 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
67	67	16 April as Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
68	68	17 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
69	69	18 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
70	70	19 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
71	71	20 Representative Carey Hamilton for distribution.
