32 | 32 | | 7 neurological disease caused by a lack of the chemical |

34 | 34 | | 9 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of |

35 | 35 | | 10 death in the United States and has an estimated annual total |
---|
36 | 36 | | 11 cost of $51.9 billion per year, split evenly between medical |
---|
37 | 37 | | 12 costs and non-medical costs, such as lost wages and caregiver |
---|
38 | 38 | | 13 time and expenses; |

39 | 39 | | 14 Whereas, It is important to educate Hoosiers about the |
---|
40 | 40 | | 15 symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including tremors, rigidity |
---|
41 | 41 | | 16 and bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability, |

42 | 42 | | 17 shuffling gait, speech and swallowing disturbances, cognitive |

43 | 43 | | 18 impairment and dementia, and difficulty with fine hand |

45 | 45 | | 20 Whereas, Since not everyone with Parkinson's disease has all |

46 | 46 | | 21 of the associated symptoms, careful diagnosis is essential; |

47 | 47 | | 22 Whereas, Research suggests that the cause of Parkinson's |

48 | 48 | | 23 disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors, |

49 | 49 | | 24 and at this time there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt |

56 | 56 | | 5 Whereas, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical |

57 | 57 | | 6 professionals are working to improve the quality of life of |

58 | 58 | | 7 persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families; and |

59 | 59 | | 8 Whereas, Increased research, education, and community |
---|
60 | 60 | | 9 support services are needed to find more effective treatments |

61 | 61 | | 10 and to provide access to quality care to those living with the |

62 | 62 | | 11 disease today: Therefore, |

63 | 63 | | 12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives |

64 | 64 | | 13 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, |

66 | 66 | | 15 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes |

67 | 67 | | 16 April as Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as |
